DiscoveryGarden
DiscoveryGarden is a new and innovative open source
software service provider, based in PEI. An autonomous spin-off company of the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) through Three Oaks Innovations Inc., the core business provides Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) to the clients of Islandora software.
Islandora is a unique and award-winning open source digital asset management (DAM) and enterprise content management (ECM) system developed and housed at UPEI under the leadership of University Librarian, Mark Leggott, who has over 20 years of experience in designing open source products. Composed of a special suite of software components, Islandora connects two best-practice open source components (Drupal and Fedora) to provide a rich and extensible stewardship system for any type of data.
Islandora fills the inadequately served needs of various sectors (especially, but not limited to, the life- sciences, cultural, health and financial) for data stewardship that can both handle large amounts of digital data and perform sophisticated analysis. Current (and mostly proprietary) ECM/DAM solutions in these sectors are unable to easily incorporate recent key innovations such as grid computing, intelligent storage, and the exploitation of pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine (to use familiar examples in the life-sciences).
The cost and inflexibility of these proprietary solutions provides a compelling case for the commitment to open source platforms. In addition to receiving products and services that maintain the highest possible standards for privacy, security, retention, processing, ownership, and integrity (the six major issues facing the utilization and stewardship of data), customers are also provided with a cost-effective alternative that can be customized to fill both their immediate and long-term needs.
From data digitization and/or transformation, software installation, maintenance, and custom development of the software, to hosting of repositories, processing and temporary storage of digital asset and training, DiscoveryGarden provides the expertise to ensure customers are able to manage and utilize their data in ways that are most beneficial to them. DiscoveryGarden is, therefore, not only a new business venture, it is also new way of thinking about how raw data can be transformed into useful information, and its leading the way for businesses, public agencies, research institutes and cultural sectors.
