About Islandora
UPEI Robertson Library
Islandora Project Receives Major Grant Funding
Islandora VirtualBox Demo ver 1.0 Instructions Available
Islandora is an open source framework under development at the Robertson Library at the University of Prince Edward Island. Islandora combines the Drupal and Fedora software applications to create a robust digital asset management system that can be used for any requirement where collaboration and digital data stewardship, for the short and long term, are critical. Additional open source applications are added to the stack to create what we call Solution Packs or Sprouts.
We are creating a number of initiatives under the umbrella of the Islandora project, all developed using the innovative Islandora software suite, including:
- VRE (Virtual Research Environment) - custom collections of data models and applications providing best-practice stewardship of research data. The VRE Sprouts are developed through collaboration with a number of researchers at UPEI and elsewhere and will be released on this site starting in Q2 2010. Initial VRE Sprouts will include Life Sciences, Epidemiology, Virtual Microscopy and Lab Management. More information about our VRE's is available from the links on this site.
- IslandArchives.ca - an exemplar set of digital collections created by UPEI and our partners, providing access to a wide range of digital documents and materials. The Sprouts released in 2010 will include Books, Magazines and Newspapers, Maps, Video/Audio.
- Repository-In-A-Box - a unique solution for building Institutional Repositories and as seen with UPEI's own IslandScholar site. A new version of the IR Sprout will be available in February 2010.
There are also an increasing number of institutions using Islandora for their own repository systems. If you are using Islandora we would like to add your name to our list of collaborators: contact Mark at the co-ordinates below with information about your project.
For more information about Islandora, explore our site, request an account via the Login button above, or by sending an e-mail to Mark Leggott (mleggott@upei.ca).
Islandora Collections
The links below provide access to a number of Islandora sites (most of them live production sites) which present the evolution of the Islandora suite. While much of the functionality of Islandora is "under the hood" this will give you a representative example. As the Islandora project evolves, this site will provide additional information and links to downloadable solution packs.
Islandora Resources
NOTE: This page is being updated for full release in March 2010.
As Islandora evolves we will be making a host of resources available, including promotional material, white papers, presentations and other resources from our partners. For additional software or modules, go to the Islandora Software link in the navigation on the top left.

Current VREs
The VRE is an active Robertson Library development project and sites are often in a state of flux. Here is a list of active sites as of August 2008.
- General/Library/Digital Archives Islandora Sites
Most of these sites use an Islandora instance that uses Fedora for access to digital assets as well as workflow automation.
- http://islandora.org - The home of the Islandora Project and the main site for access to the latest news and information about Islandora.
- http://library.upei.ca - Robertson Library website.
- http://livingarchives.ca - Living Archives CCOP Project site. First implementation of Islandora, running Drupal 5/Fedora 2.
- http://islandarchives.ca - Island Archives umbrella site for a wide range of digital collections produced by UPEI and partners.
- http://islandlives.ca - Island Lives is a collection of digital books (local histories) and includes some community collaboration functions. IslandLives uses the most recent Islandora installation and one that uses the latest Drupal 6/Fedora 3 release, including sophisticated workflows, Djatoka JPEG2000 integration and more.
- http://vre.upei.ca/uasc - The Red and White collection provides access to the complete collection of UPEI's student newspaper. This runs the Drupal 5/Fedora 2 Islandora release and serves data as PDF.
- http://islandscholar.ca - The Island Scholar site is UPEI's implementation of the Islandora Institutional Repository solution pack. The live version uses the Drupal 5/Fedora 2 Islandora release, which has been fully ported to Drupal 6/Fedora 3. A generalized version of IslandScholar will be released in October 2009 as the first Islandora Solution Pack.
- http//lmmontgomery.ca - Lucy Maud Montgomery Institute website. Undergoing an update to the look and feel; an Islandora site that uses the Uber Cart Drupal module.
- http://islandstudies.ca - Institute of Island Studies - Island Studies Journal and Blog. Currently running Drupal 5/Fedora 2.
- http://vre.upei.ca/apla - Atlantic Provinces Library Association website. A Drupal-only Islandora implementation.
- http://vre.upei.ca/bas - The Basic Academic Skills site provides a sample of Flash object stored in Fedora and serviced up using a specific player application. BAS uses the Drupal 5/Fedora 2 Islandora implementation.
- http://vre.upei.ca/riri - Home of the Red Island Repository Institute (Fedora Workshop). RIRI uses the latest Islandora release and is also a test community for the latest releases.
- http://vre.upei.ca/dev - The original UPEI VRE/Islandora development site. This site will soon be removed as it is replaced by the Islandora.ca site.
- Research-Focused Islandora Sites
Many of these sites are research focused and have limited information available without a username/login. These sites also represent a wide variation in Islandora implementation, from a Drupal-only collaborative site, to complex research models using the latest version of Islandora, Drupal and Fedora.
- http://vre.upei.ca/acbv - Atlantic Centre for Bioactive Valuation.
- http://vre.upei.ca/accbr - Atlantic Centre for Comparative Biomedical Research.
- http://vre.upei.ca/amars Movement and Resource Selection.
- http://vre.upei.ca/airs - Annabel Cohen's AIRS (Advancing Interdisciplinary Research in Singing) site. This is our exemplar when it comes to the number of collaborators, with over 50 researchers in more than 15 countries. The Islandora site is currently being ported to the latest Islandora Drupal 6/Fedora 3 release and will also implement Groups functions using taxonomies and Panels. It will also have exemplar Fedora collections for complex audio and video data.
- http://vre.upei.ca/cbm - Juergen Krause's Centre for Biotechnology Management. This site will be using Drupal forms to capture survey data and store it in Fedora.
- http://vre.upei.ca/cmtc - Annabel Cohen's CMTC (Culture, Multimedia, Technology, and Cognition) site. the CMTC project provided the basis for the Islandora/VRE developments, including the original hardware platform.
- http://vre.upei.ca/greenchem - Michael Shaver's Green Chemistry site.
- http://vre.upei.ca/iis - The Institute of Island Studies site.
- http://vre.upei.ca/itl - The Invasive Tunicates Lab site includes an online store for requesting DNA samples.
- http://vre.upei.ca/mhl - The Mollusc Health Lab site was the exemplar site for the development of many of the features that made it to our standard VRE Islandora installation.
- http://vre.upei.ca/mnpl - Russ Kerr's Marine Natural Products Lab is our current research exemplar Islandora site and provides some advanced content models stewarding biological data, including sample descriptions, bioassays, NMS, Mass Spectrometer data and more.
- http://vre.upei.ca/morphospace - Christain Lacroix's Morphospace site. This site provides some more recent Islandora features (such as Coverflow-style views direct from Fedora) for working with image data, in this case electron microscopy.
- http://vre.upei.ca/mqm - The Maritime Quality Milk site.
- http://vre.upei.ca/mprg - The Marx and Psychology site.
- http://vre.upei.ca/recd/ - The Research in Early Child Development site.
- http://discoveryspace.upei.ca/theriowiki - The Theriowiki site is currently a Drupal-only installation with a large community that is building a veterinary medicine textbook. The future version of the site will dynamically sync content from Drupal to Fedora.
